Kaum ein Thema sorgt bei Mountainbikern derzeit für mehr Gesprächsstoff als Laufrad- und Reifenformate. Traditionelle 26er Reifen haben für nahezu alle Einsatzbereiche an Bedeutung verloren. Die großen 29er Reifen und das Mittelformat 27,5 Zoll sind die zwei wichtigsten Größen geworden. Rahmen und Gabel des Bikes geben die Grundgröße vor, doch in jeder Größe haben Mountainbiker eine üppige Reifenauswahl, um das Fahrverhalten auf den Fahrstil und Einsatzbereich abzustimmen. In nahezu alle modernen Mountainbikes passen Reifen mit einer Breite von 1,9 Zoll (ca. 48 mm) bis etwa 2,25 Zoll (ca. 60 mm). In abfahrtsorientierte Bikes passen oft noch breitere Reifen für zusätzliche Kontrolle und Traktion. Dazu kommen extrabreite Fatbike-Reifen und das B+ Format.. Viele Modelle gibt es zudem in einer Tubeless-Version, die durch eine relativ einfache Umrüstung auch schlauchlos nutzbar ist.
