Um einen Gang am Fahrrad zu wechseln, sind am Lenker befestigte Schalthebel/-griffe notwendig. Am gängigsten sind die sogenannten Index-/Trigger-Schalthebel die deutlich hör- und spürbar nach jedem Gangwechsel einrasten. Immer beliebter werden Drehschaltgriffe. Für einen Gangwechsel auf ein anderes Kettenblatt wird häufig der Schalthebel auf der linken Seite des Lenkers verwendet. Um auf ein anderes Ritzel am Hinterrad zu wechseln, befindet sich der Schalthebel normalerweise auf der rechten Seite. Shimano und SRAM sind die bekanntesten Hersteller von Schalthebeln. Hier unterscheiden wir hauptsächlich zwischen folgenden Schalthebeln: Rapidfire, Trigger, Dualcontrol, Drehgriffschalter und Daumenschalter.
