Seitdem Herrn Dunlop 1888 die Idee mit dem luftgefüllten Reifen hatte, hält der Veloschlauch die Luft in unseren Reifen. Üblicherweise sind Schläuche aus Butyl gefertigt, einem nahezu luftdichten, flexiblen und robustem Gummi. Für den ambitionierten Sporteinsatz gibt es auch Schläuche aus Latex. Sie sind leichter und noch flexibler. Aber sie erfordern ein regelmässiges Nachpumpen und ein Defekt lässt sich mit Flickzeug nur eingeschränkt beheben. Die Schlauchgrösse wird von den Herstellern meist als Bereich durch die ETRTO-Angaben angegeben. Der Schlauch sollte so gewählt werden, dass der genutzte Reifendurchmesser und die Reifenbreite in dem angegeben Bereich des Schlauchs liegen. Bei der Wahl des Ventils empfehlen wir, sich am bisherigen Ventil zu orientieren. Denn das Autoventil (AV) und Dunlop Ventil (DV) benötigen ein größeres Ventilloch in der Felge als das Sklaverand Ventil (SV).
